A staged picture can record a real affection without recording a natural moment.

Arranged does not mean false. Everybody knew the camera was there and was told where to stand, and the fondness in the picture is still the fondness they actually had. What is missing is spontaneity, which is a different thing from truth. Two people posing can be genuinely glad to be beside each other.

When you look at formal family pictures, read them for the relationships rather than dismissing them as arrangements. Take the posed shot as well as the candid one, since the posed one is what people keep. And do not wait for a natural moment that may never arrive.
