Absence settles into the fittings of a house. A hook with nothing on it, a chair nobody uses, a mug at the back of the cupboard keeps announcing a person every time you pass, and the announcement arrives without warning. That is one of the harder parts of a home after a loss. The room goes on expecting somebody.

There is no correct thing to do with such places. You are allowed to leave the hook empty, to hang your own coat there, or to change nothing at all for a long time. If you can, tell someone which spot in the house is the difficult one.
