A camera gives attention a rectangle that the rest of the world continues beyond.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Framing is a decision about exclusion as much as inclusion. Whatever a picture shows, the situation continued to the left and the right, before and after, and the rectangle quietly suggests that what is inside it was the whole of the thing. Images are arguments about where to stop looking. That does not make them dishonest, only partial.

When you look at a photograph this week, ask what was standing just outside it. When you take one, take a wider frame as well as the tidy one. And put the same question to any account of an event that arrives already cropped.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What falls outside the frame you have chosen to look through?
