A book club works when disagreement gives the pages more room.

A group reading the same thing is only useful when the readings differ. If everyone agrees quickly the conversation closes and the book gets smaller, whereas two people who saw opposite things must both go back to the pages, and it opens up. Disagreement is the mechanism rather than a problem to be managed.

In your next group conversation about anything, ask the person who saw it differently to say more. Resist the urge to settle it early. The aim is to leave with a larger version of the thing than the one you brought.
