Man is but a reed, the weakest in nature, but he is a thinking reed.

— Blaise Pascal

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

You are physically fragile and you know it, which is the whole of the situation. Almost anything in the world can end you, and none of it understands what it is doing, whereas you can see the arrangement clearly. That awareness is small consolation against the facts and it is also the only thing separating you from them. Fragility and understanding arrive together.

When your own smallness is pressing on you, it may help to notice that the capacity to feel it is not a weakness but the rare part. Spend some of that capacity on something worth thinking about rather than on the smallness itself.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What keeps its worth in you even when you feel fragile?
