The meal tastes different when you remember somebody once prayed for enough to eat.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Something as routine as a meal sits on top of an enormous amount of luck and history that never shows up on the plate. Remembering that not everyone has had enough, and that your own line probably includes people who did not, does not spoil the food. It gives an ordinary act a floor under it.

You do not need a ritual for this, only a pause. Once a day, before eating, let the fact register. Attention costs nothing and changes the texture of the thing considerably.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did you last eat without thinking about the food at all?
