Although no sculptured marble should rise to their memory, nor engraved stone bear record of their deeds, yet will their remembrance be as lasting as the land they honored.

— Daniel Webster

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

What gets remembered is rarely what was built to be remembered. Monuments decay and names wear off stone, while the effect of a life carries on in the place and the people it changed, often under nobody’s name at all. That is a quieter kind of permanence and a more reliable one. It does not depend on anybody deciding you were important.

If you are grieving someone, the record that matters is already in the people they shaped. And in your own work, worry less about whether it carries your name and more about whether it will still be holding something up.
