I do not know the method of drawing up an indictment against a whole people.

— Edmund Burke

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Guilt belongs to people who did things and does not survive being spread across a population. Once a charge covers everyone in a category it stops being a charge, since there is no way to answer it and no way to be innocent of it. That is what makes the move dangerous and popular, since it names nobody in particular. Whole peoples cannot be tried, only punished.

When you hear a sentence beginning with an entire group, ask who did what. Insist on the particular case rather than the general accusation. Watch for the same shortcut in your own complaints, quieter and just as false.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which whole group have you condemned for a few members’ acts?
