Liberty must be limited in order to be enjoyed.

— Edmund Burke

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Unlimited options are not the same as freedom, and past a point they work against it. Keeping every possibility open means committing to none, which is how people end up with plenty of theoretical liberty and very little they actually did. Choosing closes doors, and the closed doors are what make the remaining room usable. A limit is what lets you enjoy what sits inside it.

Take one area where you have been keeping your options open and pick something. Accept that you are giving up the alternatives, and give the choice long enough to become good. Freedom you never spend is hard to tell apart from having none.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would you lose if you had no limits at all?
