Liberty, without wisdom, is license.

— Edmund Burke

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Freedom with no judgement behind it is doing whatever occurs to you, which tends to end badly for you and for whoever is nearby. The permission is the easy half; knowing what is worth doing with it is the hard half, and nobody hands you that as well. This is why people who suddenly get more scope often make a mess of it. Nothing in the freedom itself supplies the wisdom.

When you get more latitude, spend the first stretch working out what it is for. Ask someone who has had it longer what they wish they had done differently. Restraint chosen early keeps latitude from being taken back.
