There is no limit to the vanity of this world. Each spoke in the wheel thinks the whole strength of the wheel depends upon it.

— Josh Billings

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Everyone privately believes the thing would not work without them. It is a comfortable belief and a useful one, because it keeps people doing their part, but it is almost never true at the scale it is felt. Take any spoke out and the wheel goes on, more slowly perhaps, differently, but on. It is worth knowing in both directions: less indispensable, and also less anxious.

If you are exhausted from being essential, test it. Take a day off and let something run without you. What breaks will tell you what actually depends on you, and what does not break gives you back some of your week.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would carry on perfectly well without you next week?
