Observe moderation. In all, the fitting season is best.

— Hesiod

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Moderation is less about quantity than about fit. The same amount of work, food, spending or talk is right in one season and wrong in another, so a fixed rule will be wrong roughly half the time. What is being asked for is judgement about the occasion: enough, at the point where it belongs, and then a stop. The stopping is the difficult half.

Pick the area where you habitually overshoot and set the stopping point before you begin rather than during. Decide the hour you will leave, the amount you will spend, the length you will speak. Deciding in advance is much easier than deciding in the middle.
