The possession of great powers no doubt carries with it a contempt for mere external show.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

People who can genuinely do the thing tend to lose interest in looking as though they can. The signalling, the titles, the visible props, all of it is for an audience, and someone occupied with the work has no attention left for the audience. This is why real ability often arrives underdressed, and why display is a poor guide to competence in either direction.

Look at how much of your effort this week goes into appearing capable rather than being capable. Move one hour from the first column to the second, and let the appearance look after itself for a while.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What display could you drop without losing an ounce of standing?
