Dissimulation, even the most innocent in its nature, is ever productive of embarrassment; whether the design is evil or not, artifice is always dangerous and almost inevitably disgraceful.

REFLECTION
Even harmless pretending has a maintenance cost. A small false impression, given to avoid awkwardness, has to be remembered, defended and kept consistent with everything you say afterwards, and the effort shows. When it comes apart, and it usually does, the damage is out of all proportion to the original convenience, because people mind the concealment more than the thing concealed.
Find the small thing you have let someone believe that is not quite so. Correct it lightly this week, before it needs a story, and take the brief awkwardness over the longer upkeep.
Which small pretence of yours is getting harder to maintain?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
