Men find it more easy to flatter than to praise.

— Jean Paul

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Flattery is easy because it costs nothing and asks for nothing to be true. Genuine praise requires you to have looked closely enough to say what was actually good, and it involves admitting that someone did something you could not, or did not. That small sting is why compliments so often arrive vague: the vagueness protects the giver.

Praise one person this week with a specific detail, naming the thing they did and why it was hard. Notice whether you feel a flicker of reluctance, and go ahead anyway.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whom have you flattered recently instead of praising honestly?
