Tears of joy are the dew in which the sun of righteousness is mirrored.

— Jean Paul

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Crying from happiness is the body admitting that something matters more than you let on. It tends to arrive at moments of goodness rather than pleasure: a reconciliation, someone else’s success, a kindness you did not expect. Those tears are worth paying attention to, because they show you what you actually value, which is not always what you say you value.

The next time your eyes go at something unexpectedly, do not smother it or explain it away. Ask afterwards what exactly moved you, and take the answer as reliable information about where to spend your life.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did something good last move you to tears?
