Censure is the tax a man pays to the public for being eminent.

— Jonathan Swift

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Criticism scales with visibility, and it arrives whether or not the work deserves it. Anyone who becomes known for something has effectively signed up for a running commentary, most of it from people with no stake in the outcome. Treating each piece as a verdict is exhausting and mistaken, since much of it is simply the cost of being seen at all. It is a charge on the position rather than a judgment on the person.

Separate the criticism that comes from someone who would be affected if you were wrong from all the rest. Answer that kind carefully and let the remainder pass without a reply.
