I have here only made a nosegay of culled flowers, and have brought nothing of my own but the thread that ties them together.

— Michel de Montaigne

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Gathering and arranging is real work, even when none of the raw material is yours. The thread is the judgement: which pieces belong together, in what order, and what the assembly says that no single piece said. People who count only original material undervalue the person who chose well.

If your job this week is largely selection, stop calling it nothing. Name the principle behind what you kept and what you left out, and say it plainly when you hand the work over. That principle is the part you made.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where is your real contribution the arrangement rather than the pieces?
