A weak mind is like a microscope, which magnifies trifling things, but cannot receive great ones.

— Philip Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

A mind under strain narrows, and everything small that comes near it swells to fill the field: a curt email, a look, a misplaced word. The same mind cannot take in anything large, because the large thing will not fit through that aperture. Scale, not intelligence, is what has gone wrong.

When a trifle is occupying your whole day, treat it as information about your capacity rather than about the trifle. Sleep, eat, get outside, and look again. If it still matters tomorrow at the same size, deal with it then.
