Be your character what it will, it will be known; and nobody will take it upon your word.

— Philip Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

What you are actually like gets out, slowly and without your permission, through a thousand small pieces of evidence you did not think anyone was collecting. Your own account of yourself carries almost no weight in that process, and pressing it hard tends to work against you. People believe the pattern rather than the claim.

Stop describing your integrity, reliability or generosity and let the record do it. If there is a gap between the description and the evidence, close it from the evidence side. Reputation follows at its own pace, which is slower than you would like.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What do you tell people about yourself that your actions contradict?
