The fear of death is more to be dreaded than death itself.

— Publilius Syrus

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Dread occupies the present in a way the thing itself never will. Fear of an ending can shrink the years leading up to it, filling ordinary evenings with a rehearsal of something that will require no rehearsing when it comes. The steady view is that the anticipation is the part you actually have to live through.

There is no instruction here, only an option. When the fear arrives, you might notice that it is asking you to solve something unsolvable, and let it pass without being argued with. Then return to whatever the day was offering, which is the part still available to you.
