The virtue in most request is conformity. Self-reliance is its aversion. It loves not realities and creators, but names and customs.

STILLNESS
Most groups reward fitting in far more than they reward being right, and they do it without ever deciding to. What gets praised is the familiar form, the recognised name, the way things are done, and anyone working from first principles looks awkward until they are proved correct. The pressure is real and mostly invisible, which is what makes it effective.
Notice one thing you do because it is expected rather than because it works. Ask what you would do if the custom did not exist. You need not defy everything, since changing one habit back to something you actually chose is enough to keep the faculty alive.
Where do you go along because disagreeing would cost too much?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
