The use of travelling is to regulate imagination by reality, and instead of thinking how things may be, to see them as they are.

— Samuel Johnson

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Going somewhere corrects the picture you have been carrying. Imagination fills gaps with whatever is dramatic or feared, and contact with the actual place, job or person replaces that with something duller and far more accurate. The correction usually works in both directions: what you dreaded is smaller than you thought, and what you idealised is ordinary. Either way you stop arguing with a version that does not exist.

Where you have a strong opinion formed at a distance, arrange the smallest possible visit. Go to the office, meet the person, try the thing for a day. One afternoon of contact is worth a year of speculation.
