Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.

— Mark Twain

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Kindness registers where words do not reach. It travels through tone, timing, the fact that someone stayed, an action taken without being asked, and it lands even when nothing is said or nothing is understood. That is why it works across a language barrier, across an argument where every sentence has already failed, across a bedside where there is nothing useful left to say.

When you cannot find the right words for someone having a hard time, stop hunting for them. Do one concrete thing instead: show up, carry something, sit there. The message gets through by a different route than the one you were trying.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did someone’s kindness reach you without a word being spoken?
