You have power over your mind not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.

— Marcus Aurelius

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Very little of what happens is up for negotiation. What remains is the interior handling: what you tell yourself about the event, how long you rehearse it, what you decide to do next. Calling that power is not a claim that events do not hurt, or that a bad situation is fixed by thinking differently about it. It is a narrower point about where your remaining influence sits once the outside has stopped taking requests.

When something lands badly this week, separate the fact from the commentary you are adding. Deal with the fact. The commentary can usually be shortened, which leaves more of you available.
