Don’t be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Treating your choices as experiments changes what a bad outcome means. An experiment that returns an unexpected result has not failed, it has told you something, and the person running it is not on trial. Most timidity comes from the opposite framing, where every decision is a final verdict on your judgement and therefore has to be right first time.

Pick something you have been hesitating over and set it up as a trial with an end date. Two months, then review. Deciding in advance how you will judge it removes most of the fear, because you are no longer committing your whole life, only a defined stretch of it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would you try if you called it an experiment?
