He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.

— Friedrich Nietzsche

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

A reason to keep going does not make hard things lighter, but it changes how they are carried. Having something you are living toward, a person, a piece of work, a promise, gives difficult days somewhere to point, and that can make a great deal more bearable. The reason does not have to explain the hardship or make it worth it, and it can be as small as a spring you would like to see.

On a hard day, it can help to name what you are living toward. If nothing comes to mind right now, that is not a failure on your part, since some reasons only come into view further along, and it can be a good time to let someone close to you, or someone whose job is to help, share some of the weight.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Why do you keep going when it gets genuinely hard?
