Be sure you put your feet in the right place, then stand firm.

— Abraham Lincoln

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Firmness is only a virtue once you have chosen well. Standing your ground on a position you never examined is just stubbornness with good posture. The order matters: take the time to decide carefully, gather what you need to know, and then, once you have, stop reopening the question every time someone pushes. Many people do these in reverse, committing quickly and then wavering under pressure.

Before your next significant stand, whether at work or at home, give the decision proper deliberation and write down your reasons. When the pushback comes, reread them. If they still hold, you can hold too.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where are you standing firm without checking the ground first?
