Certain achievements are paid for out of a private account, and the bill is settled by the people at home. Missed years, a partner carrying everything alone, children who learned not to expect you. The public part of the accomplishment looks the same either way, which is what makes the trade so easy to keep making without ever naming it.

Look honestly at who is currently funding your ambition and whether they agreed to it. Some seasons genuinely require more, and that can be fine if it is discussed and temporary. What causes damage is the version that is never acknowledged and quietly becomes permanent.
