The Kingdom of Heaven is not a place, but a state of mind.

— John Burroughs

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Whatever you are hoping to arrive at may turn out to be a way of being rather than a destination with an address. People spend years arranging conditions, the job, the house, the settled relationship, on the assumption that peace is stored somewhere ahead. Some traditions locate it inside the person instead, and you can take that literally, as metaphor, or as neither.

The usable part is smaller than the claim. Notice whether your good hours actually depend on the arrangements you keep chasing. Often they do not, and that is worth finding out before another decade goes by.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did you last feel genuinely at peace inside yourself?
