The mind that is wise mourns less for what age takes away than what it leaves behind.

— William Wordsworth

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Ageing takes things away, and the losses are the part everyone counts: strength, speed, faces, whole decades. The harder reckoning is with what stays behind, since grudges, habits and unfinished business do not fade along with the body. A mind at peace spends less of itself grieving the subtraction and more on what is still sitting in the room.

If something has been left in place for years because it seemed too late to touch, that is the place to look. Ask what remains that you would rather not carry further. Loss will do what it does without your permission, but the remainder is still yours to tend.
