Most people have never learned that one of the main aims in life is to enjoy it.

— Samuel Butler

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Enjoyment gets treated as the reward for finishing, and there is always something left to finish. Duty, achievement and worry are easy to justify to yourself, while pleasure seems to require an argument, which is a strange arrangement given how short the whole thing is. Nobody teaches you that having a good time is a legitimate aim rather than a lapse.

Ask what you have been postponing until things settle down. Then consider that they may never settle. Put one genuinely enjoyable thing in the calendar this week and defend it the way you would defend a meeting somebody else called.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did you last plan something purely for enjoyment?
