Obedience is the mother of success and is wedded to safety.

— Aeschylus

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Following the rules and the instruction of people who know more is genuinely how most competence gets built, at least early on. Learning any craft involves doing it their way long before you have the standing to argue, and skipping that stage produces confident people who are not much good. Safety, likewise, is mostly a set of procedures somebody wrote after a bad outcome.

The limit is obvious, since obedience has also been the mechanism of enormous harm. Keep a line you will not cross, and inside that line take the instruction seriously for longer than your pride would like.
