Peace is the virtue of civilization. War is its crime.

— Victor Hugo

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Keeping the peace is presented as an achievement rather than a default, which is the right way round. Not fighting takes institutions, restraint and a long series of unexciting decisions by people who could have chosen otherwise, and none of it makes the news the way the alternative does. What gets called civilisation is largely the accumulated machinery for settling things without violence.

The domestic version works the same. Every argument you did not escalate was work, even though nobody noticed. Give yourself credit for the fights that did not happen, and keep the machinery in repair before you need it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH
