Beauty without grace is the hook without the bait.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Something can be technically perfect and still fail to draw anyone in. Grace is the part that makes a person or a thing approachable: ease, warmth, the sense that you are welcome to come closer. Without it, beauty gets admired from a distance and then left alone, which is a strange kind of failure.

The same holds for work, for rooms and for writing. Correctness earns respect and does not earn affection. If something you made is being praised and not used, the missing ingredient is probably not more polish but some visible sign of the person behind it.
