Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror.

— Khalil Gibran

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Moments of real beauty tend to arrive with a sense of something enormous briefly visible in something small. A face, a piece of music, light on a wall: whatever is doing the moving seems to point past itself. You need no metaphysics to recognise the experience, only to have had it once.

Such moments cannot be scheduled, but they can be missed, and usually are, through hurry or through reaching immediately for a camera. When one arrives, stay in it a few seconds longer than feels natural. That extra pause is most of what people mean by paying attention.
