Wisdom has never made a bigot, but learning has.

— Josh Billings

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Accumulating information can make somebody narrower rather than broader. Knowledge hands you positions to defend, categories to sort people into, and the confidence of having read more than whoever you are talking to. Judgment runs the other way, since it includes knowing how much you do not know, and that loosens the grip on any single conclusion.

So check what your learning is doing to you. If it mainly supplies reasons why other people are wrong, something has gone sideways. The better sign is finding more situations in which you say you are not sure.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where has what you know made you less generous to people?
