Studies perfect nature and are perfected still by experience.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Reading sharpens what you already have; it does not install anything from nothing. And what you learn on the page stays partly theoretical until it meets a real situation that refuses to behave like the example. The two halves need each other, and most people favour one and neglect the other, either collecting knowledge they never use or accumulating years without ever examining them.

Work out which side you lean on. If you read a lot, put one idea into practice this week; if you mostly do, spend an hour finding out what somebody else already worked out about the thing you keep struggling with.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What did you only understand after doing it badly first?
