Wisdom alone is the science of other sciences.

— Plato

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Knowing things and knowing what to do with what you know are separate capacities, and only the second organises the first. Any body of expertise can tell you how, and none of them can tell you whether, or when, or at what cost. The judgment that ranks and applies the specialities is not itself one of them, which is why brilliant people can be catastrophically unwise.

Worth asking, about the areas where you are competent, whether you have ever stepped back and asked what the competence is for. Skill accumulates on its own. Perspective on it only arrives if you go looking.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where does what you know still need judgment to be useful?
