The truth is rarely pure and never simple.

— Oscar Wilde

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Accounts that arrive clean have usually been cleaned. Real situations contain several things being true at once, people acting from mixed motives, and details that do not fit the story anyone wants to tell, and the version that resolves neatly has generally had those trimmed away. Simplicity is a property of explanations, not of events.

So when a case is unusually satisfying, be a little suspicious of your satisfaction. Ask who is left out, what does not fit, and which part you skipped past because it complicated things. Living with an unresolved account is uncomfortable and often closer to accurate.
