Do not hire a man who does your work for money, but him who does it for love of it.

— Henry David Thoreau

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Motivation shows up in the parts of a job nobody checks. Someone who cares about the work will straighten the thing that was already almost fine, while someone counting only the payment stops exactly where the payment stops. That difference rarely appears in an interview and appears in everything afterwards.

None of which is a reason to pay people badly, since fondness for a craft is not wages and does not feed anyone. When choosing who to work with, ask what they do when a job is nearly finished and nobody is looking. Then pay them properly and let them care.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who around you clearly loves the work they are doing?
