God has two dwellings; one in heaven, and the other in a meek and thankful heart.

— Izaak Walton

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

You can spend a long time looking upward for something that is also, quietly, a matter of disposition. Two conditions keep turning up in people who seem to have found it: they are not busy defending their own importance, and they are able to be grateful without being given anything new. Those two are related. Pride crowds the room, and gratitude makes space in it.

This week, watch for the moments you reach to correct someone’s impression of you. Let one of them pass unanswered. Then name a single ordinary thing you already have and would hate to lose.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would you have to notice daily to stay thankful?
