He who has so little knowledge of human nature as to seek happiness by changing anything but his own disposition will waste his life in fruitless efforts.

— Samuel Johnson

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Rearranging your circumstances changes less than you expect, because the way you meet a day travels with you into the new job and the new city. Conditions do matter, and some of them matter enormously. But once the obvious problems are handled, most of the difference comes from disposition: how quickly you take offense, how tightly you hold a plan, how much you rehearse.

When you notice yourself waiting for conditions to shift before you can feel better, pick one of those habits and work on it instead. A week of catching yourself mid-rehearsal will tell you more than another move would.
