In art, the hand can never execute anything higher than the heart can imagine.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Skill can only deliver what was conceived. Technique will carry a small idea to a high finish and it cannot raise the idea itself, which is why work can be polished and still feel like nothing. What you make is bounded by what you genuinely care about and how deeply you have let yourself look at it. The bottleneck is usually attention rather than ability.

Before the next thing you make, spend the first stretch of time on the conception instead of the execution. Ask what would make it worth doing at all, and let the answer outrun your current craft.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Is your craft outrunning what you actually care about?
