Judge of your natural character by what you do in your dreams.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Waking life is full of editing. You choose your words, soften your reactions, and act as the person you have decided to be. Sleep removes the editor, and what is left running is closer to the raw material: what you fear, what you want, who you keep chasing or apologizing to. None of it is a verdict on you, but it is information you rarely get any other way.

Keep a note by the bed for a week and write down whatever is still there when you wake. Look less at the strange events than at the feeling underneath them.
