Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers.

— Alfred Lord Tennyson

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Facts arrive fast. You can learn a subject in a season, and most of what you know you picked up quicker than you remember. Judgment moves on a different clock: it comes from having been wrong, having waited, having watched something play out over years you could not speed up. That is why a well-read person can still be foolish and a quiet one can be worth listening to.

So stop measuring yourself only by what you have learned lately. Ask instead what you understand now that you could not have ten years ago, and where you are still collecting facts as a substitute for sitting with something.
