Let every dawn be to you as the beginning of life, and every setting sun be to you as its close.

— John Ruskin

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

A day is a small version of a whole life, and treating it that way changes how you hold it. In the morning nothing has gone wrong yet, and you are allowed to begin without dragging yesterday behind you. In the evening the day is finished whether or not you finished it, and it asks to be set down. Held loosely, that rhythm keeps a life from blurring into one long unbroken worry.

Give the first ten minutes of tomorrow to deciding what this one day is for, rather than to the backlog. At night, name one thing the day contained and let the rest go unsettled until morning.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would you do differently if today were a whole life?
