Reputation is what men and women think of us; character is what God and angels know of us.

— Thomas Paine

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Reputation is assembled by other people out of the fragments they happen to see. Character is the part of you that holds steady when no one is watching and no account is being kept. The two drift apart easily, because reputation rewards appearance and character only rewards itself. When you feel the pull to manage what people think of you, you are usually working on the wrong one.

Pick one thing this week that nobody would notice if you skipped it, and do it anyway. Watch for the moments you adjust yourself only because you are being seen, and ask what you would do if you were not.
