The art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook.

— William James

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Wisdom is often described as seeing more, but a large part of it is declining to respond to most of what you see. Every day hands you slights, small errors, other people’s moods, and a hundred things that could be corrected. Reacting to all of them costs you the attention you need for the few that matter. Choosing what to leave alone is not weakness or avoidance; it is how you keep your judgment free for the things that deserve it.

This week, when something small irritates you, wait before answering and ask whether it will matter in a month. Let the ones that will not pass by unaddressed.
