The greatest use of a life is to spend it on something that will outlast it.

— William James

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Most of what fills a day gets used up by the end of it. Putting some of your effort into something that continues without you gives the work a different weight: a person you taught, a thing you built, a repair that keeps holding. You will not see most of the return on that, and it is still worth doing.

Ask what you are making that would go on standing if you stopped tending it. If nothing comes to mind, start with one person rather than a project. What you hand to someone tends to travel further than what you finish alone.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What are you making that will still matter after you?
